Individual Therapy
Individual Therapy in Port St. Lucie, Florida
Addiction treatment is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Everyone is unique and what might be effective for one person when it comes to treating substance abuse and mental health conditions might not work for someone else.
One of the many effective addiction therapy services that are offered at treatment centers around the country, including here at Amethyst Recovery Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida, is individual therapy.
When Is It Best To Seek Therapy for Addiction?
Whether you are battling substance abuse, a mental health condition, or both, it may be time to seek treatment such as therapy when your substance use or mental health condition has reached a point where it is affecting your ability to go about your daily life in a normal way.
While you may be embarrassed or ashamed to seek treatment, it is important to remember that there is nothing wrong with getting the help that you need to live your best life. Therapists are trained professionals who want what is best for you and will make sure that you feel as safe and comfortable as possible.
What is Individual Therapy?
Individual therapy, also known as psychotherapy, is a type of talk therapy that is conducted in a 1-on-1 setting. Individual therapy is a great tool that can help break down many of the proverbial walls that people suffering from addiction often put up, while also providing a safe and confidential setting to share what they are going through.
The concept of psychotherapy dates back to ancient Greece which was the first culture to view mental health issues as both physical and mental conditions. The ancient Greeks recognized and understood the benefits of using encouraging words when speaking to people, especially those with mental health issues.
Psychotherapy first made its way to North America in the mid-1700s when the first asylum was founded. Psychotherapy continued to evolve, with many of the modern-day techniques used today coming about in the 20th century.
Even today, the concept of individual psychotherapy continues to evolve with the creation of alternative, experiential therapies such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness.
What Can Individual Therapy Help With?
Individual therapy can help treat a wide variety of mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral issues such as:
- Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Stress
- Behavioral addictions (sex addiction, gambling addiction, etc)
- Eating disorders
- Anger
- Family issues
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Other mental health disorders
How Does Individual Therapy Work?
As the name implies, individual therapy is conducted in a 1-on-1 setting. Everything discussed during an individual therapy session is completely confidential.
There are a variety of different types of individual therapy, the most popular and effective being Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT helps peel back the layers, allowing the person in therapy to be able to properly identify the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that either led to or contributed to their SUD or mental health condition.
Once these thoughts, emotions, and behaviors have been properly identified, the therapist can teach the person new, healthier ways to deal with these stressors in a more healthy and productive effective form of psychotherapy including:
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Interpersonal Psychotherapy
What To Expect During an Individual Therapy Session
An individual therapy session can last anywhere from 45-60 minutes. During your first therapy session, the therapist will often ask questions to gather as much information as possible. During this first session, both parties can also decide if they would like to proceed in working together.
Based on your needs and the recommendation of the therapist, therapy sessions can be daily, every other day, once a week, or less frequent. Over time, you will begin to notice an improvement in your overall mental health.
All therapy sessions are 100% confidential in nature unless otherwise stated. In some cases, a therapist may break confidentiality if they believe that the person is in immediate danger of harming themselves or others.
Benefits of Individual Therapy
Individual therapy has numerous benefits including:
- Confidentiality – Individual therapy sessions are conducted in 1-on-1 settings allowing the person in therapy to feel comfortable opening up.
- Convenience – Since therapy sessions are 1-on-1, they can often be scheduled at times that are convenient for the person in therapy, especially in an outpatient program.
- Pace – Since you are the only one in the therapy session, each session can be held at your own pace. During a therapy session, you have a larger say in how you want the session to go
Is Individual Therapy Covered By Insurance?
Individual therapy is often covered by most major private healthcare providers as part of their mental health and addiction coverage. The amount that is covered usually depends on your insurance provider and the type of plan you have.
If you have any questions about your insurance plan as it pertains to individual therapy, you can reach out to your insurance representative or you can contact us directly. We will look over your policy and let you know what is and isn’t covered before you start treatment.
